Karin's Beautiful Site, Installing PSP files at other than C Drive Tutorial
We all know the problem. Unexpectedly we need to format our hard drive and no way
we can make a back-up before. Virus's, crashes etc.
Everything we collected, sometimes for years, is lost. All our plugins, tubes,
masks etc. etc.
But don't worry there is a solution!
It is a long and a bit complex tutorial and you need to know how to use Explorer,
making folders (will be explained) and a bit of nerves if you have never done it
before.
This tutorial is written for PSP 7.02. But will work also in other version.
This tutorial has different parts you need to follow all completely.
What you need:
More than basic knowledge about Windows (or ask somebody who has).
D drive (not cd rom) or another part of your hard disk that is not at the C part.
If you don't have it it has to be created (but do this only, only when you know
how to do it! Otherwise you will lose everything on you C drive!) with FDisk.
Back-up your C Drive (at cd rom, zip but not at the C Drive!).
Don't try FDisk if you don't know anything about DOS!!!
The easiest part, if you don't know FDisk, is to buy a small hard disk and place
it at your computer leaving the other hard disk in it. Format the new drive
and you have an extra, new, drive, called "D".
Part 1, Creating a Folder at your * Drive (* = name of the Drive... not the C!):
Create a folder called PSP (or Paint Shop Pro) at that drive. You can do that this
way:
Open Explorer.
On the left side click at the part (NOT the C drive!) where you want to install
the PSP files.
The drive name becomes blue (or another color, depends on you wallpaper/theme).
File/New/Folder.
Name this Folder PSP (or Paint Shop Pro).
At this folder create folders you need for installing plugins, tubes etc. (view
larger picture...).
Do this by clicking (on the left) at the folder named PSP at (in my case) D Drive.
File/New/Folder.
Make and rename until you have made all the folders you need.
Close Explorer.
Second Part (Letting PSP know where to find the folders you want to use):
Open Paint Shop Pro.
File/Preferences/File Locations.
Change all the path's from C:\PROGRAM FILES\JASC SOFTWARE INC\PAINT SHOP PRO 7\***\
to the part of the hard disk where you have made the folders at Part 1 of this
tutorial.
You can do this by clicking at the upper "Browse" button.
Search until you have found the right folder. Click once at it. And click OK.
Check all the boxes at the upper level and UNCHECK the second and third line.
Do this for the Tubes, Patterns, Textures, Gradients, Brushes, Frames, Shapes,
Plug-in-Filters and Styled Lines.
Click at OK.
You have to wait until everything is cached (tubes etc.).
Close PSP and open it again.
Now you have to check if the boxes at the second and third lines are unchecked.
PSP has the problem that it checks automaticly the boxes again one time.
Uncheck the second and third line boxes and click OK.
Close PSP.
Third part (installing Plugins):
For every new plugin I install I make a new folder at my D drive here:
You do this of course at the folder you made at Part 1 of this tutorial.
If the (zip) files from the Plugin you want to install only contains .8bf files
(or other files without an .exe file) you can open it and select all (Ctrl + A).
Click Extract.
Search for the folder you made and where you want to place the plugin at.
Click Extract.
Fourth Part (Installing plugin programs using .exe files)
If you want to install an .exe file (Bladepro, Eye Candy etc.) it looks very similar
but it is a bit different.
I used SuperBlade Pro as example.
Rename the folder with the plugins you are going to re-install (remember the name
you have to use it at the next step) (the ones using .exe. files to install)
PSP/Plugins... (for example: SuperBladePro_old).
Make a new folder with that name you just re-named. Underneath the PSP folder.
Click at the .exe file (if you have downloaded it check the file for a Virus first!
Follow the installation until the Question CHOOSE DESTINATION LOCATION (the text
can be a bit different at other programs).
Choose Browse.
Search for the part of your drive (my example D:\PSP\Plugins\superbladepro)... not the C drive!
where you want to re-install the program.
Click OK and follow the installation until it is complete.
The plugin will be installed at that part of your drive you have chosen.
Remember that for all plugins that are installed by using an .exe file you have to install
the program after formatting the C Drive. Make a copy to be sure and place it at
your D:\PSP\Plugins folder.
After you have installed the plugins by the .exe files open Explorer. Go to your
D:\PSP\Plugins folder. Look for the folder you just renamed.
Copy the folders called environments and textures and images underneath the
SuperBladePro folder.
There will be this question (Yours will probably in English)(overwrite existing
folders?):
Click YES. You have your plugins back at right folder.
I know it looks very complex (and it is a little) but remember... you only format
your drive when it is really necessary or when you have had a crash and that
happens (luckely!) not that often.
After formatting you C drive you have all your PSP folders including everything
at another drive. You only need to re-install the .exe programs (following Part 3
and 4 of this tutorial) and the plugin.dll and msvcrt10.dll.
